Laughter and God

Carmel Byrne rscj ran a workshop on Laughter and God on a Saturday in March, as part of the on-going programme offered in the Garden Cottage Retreat and Spirituality Centre in Kilgraston, Scotland. The day was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Carmel invited the participants to allow themselves to be liberated by the Laughter of God.

While laughter and God may seem new to many, Carmel dipped into the Bible and Christian traditional spirituality to reveal that God’s delight and laughter have been with us from the time of Abraham and Sarah.
She also quoted from Meister Eckhart on the life of the Trinity

‘Do you want to know what goes on in the Heart of theTrinity ?
I will tell you. In the Heart of the Trinity the Father laughs and gives birth to the Son.
The Son laughs back at the Father and gives birth to the Spirit.
The Trinity laughs and gives birth to us.’

Two weeks before launching this workshop, Carmel also invited and challenged her rscj sisters in the Irish/Scottish Province to enter into the Laughter of God at the opening of our Assembly in Emmaus. The opening prayer of the Assembly centred on the gift of laughter to an old woman 4,000 years ago. Carmel began with
“Like all of us here, Sarah the wife of Abraham was well past child bearing years, but she was given the gift of new life, the gift of laughter.”

MEISTER ECKHART

Do you want to know what goes on in the heart of the Trinity?
I will tell you.
In the heart of the Trinity the Father laughs and gives birth to the Son.
The Son laughs back at the Father and gives birth to the Spirit>
The whole Trinity laughs and gives birth to us.

When God laughs at the soul and the soul laughs back at God, the persons of the Trinity are begotten.
When the Father laughs at the Son and the Son laughs back at the Father, that laughter gives pleasure,
that pleasure gives joy, that joy gives love, and that is the Holy Spirit.

HAFIZ

What is the difference between your experience of Existence and that of a saint?
The saint knows that the spiritual path is a sublime chess game with God
And that the Beloved has just made such a Fantastic Move
That the saint is now continually tripping over Joy and Bursting out in Laughter
And saying, “I Surrender!”

Whereas, my dear, I am afraid you still think you have a thousand serious moves.

Hafiz tells us that the Beloved’s nature is pure Joy.
The closer we come to Him, the more we are able to hear and feel God’s Laughter.
The rhythm of His Laughter is the music of the dance of life.
That music is the essence of Love and it is the radiant core of every song of Hafiz.
